Keyboard Instruments
In addition to concert-quality pianos, the Keyboard Area offers students the opportunity to learn and perform on a variety of excellent instruments. Access to this diverse range of instruments under the guidance of dedicated faculty provides a comprehensive and enriching performance experience, broadening the perspectives and versatility of musicians.
Harpsichord
The MSU College of Music proudly features a dedicated harpsichord crafted by renowned builder Robert Duffy. Donated by Taylor Johnston, this exquisite instrument enhances the performance and study of Baroque and early music, offering students an authentic and high-quality tool for their musical explorations. The harpsichord’s rich tonal qualities and precise craftsmanship provide a unique and valuable resource for both solo and ensemble performances, significantly enriching the musical experience and opportunities available to students at MSU.
Fortepiano
The MSU College of Music also has a fortepiano available for student performances. This historically significant instrument allows students to authentically explore and perform Classical and early Romantic repertoire. With its distinct tonal characteristics and historical accuracy, the fortepiano provides an invaluable resource for both solo and ensemble work. It greatly enhances the students’ understanding and appreciation of period-specific performance practices, offering a distinctive and enriching addition to the keyboard experience at MSU.
Red Cedar Organ
The MSU College of Music is home to the Red Cedar Organ, “Opus 134,” designed and custom-built by Létourneau Organs. This magnificent instrument significantly expands the performance opportunities for students, offering a rich, resonant sound ideal for a wide range of organ repertoire. Located in the MSU Alumni Memorial Chapel, the Red Cedar Organ provides an authentic and inspiring tool for students to learn, study, and perform. Its presence enhances the educational experience, allowing students to engage deeply with the complexities and nuances of organ music.
MSU Carillon, Beaumont Tower
Beaumont Tower is an iconic feature of Michigan State University and offers a unique and enriching opportunity for College of Music students and non-majors to learn and perform on its carillon. This magnificent carillon instrument, with 49 bells, allows students to explore the art of carillon playing, providing a distinct and resonant musical experience.
