The percussion studio is made up of a diverse group of students from a variety of backgrounds. The studio of approximately twenty-five includes undergraduate students majoring in music performance, education and composition and graduate students in the masters, performance diploma and doctoral programs.
The percussion studio attracts and works with a diverse group of students studying music performance, education, and composition at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students perform in state-of-the-art, prominent venues at MSU and within the College. All studio members can participate in the MSU Percussion Ensemble—a chamber group devoted to new and classic repertoire. The ensemble has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and the Blue Griffin Recital Series. Esteemed guest artists regularly mentor and perform with the group.
This annual event showcases a select group of student musicians across a range of disciplines, where they present diverse repertoire to a panel of judges to compete for a chance to solo with MSU’s top ensembles.
The MSU Symphony Band, under the direction of David Thornton, presents a compelling program featuring Berlioz’s Marche Hongroise, the world premiere of Maxwell Kowal’s Express, and Nelhýbel’s Trittico.
The MSU Wind Symphony, with guest conductor Tyler Austin and guest ensemble Newfound Winds, presents a vibrant program featuring Adams’ Incandescence, Flagello’s The Bird-While, Copland’s Buckaroo Holiday, and the world premiere of Frank Duarte’s Lenguaje, Symphony No. 1.
The MSU Symphony Orchestra, under Octavio Más-Arocas, offers a sweeping program featuring Gala Flagello’s introspective Everything Beautiful, Holst’s iconic cosmic masterpiece The Planets, and a student-composed Sam and Mary Austin Fanfare.
The program, conducted by Arris Golden, features Children’s March by Percy Grainger, Of Endless Miles and Empty Rafts by Michele Fernández, the world premiere of Hymn to the Red Cedar by MSU composer Carlos LaLonde, and Divertimento for Winds and Percussion by Roger Cichy.
