Courses are intertwined with master classes, private studies, and studio classes. Each student takes private lessons with an applied studies professor while also enjoying a wide range of performance opportunities. Ensembles include 12 jazz combos, four nonets and three big bands. Some of the world’s leading jazz musicians make regular visits to the College of Music to give master classes and performances. Students also work, perform, and network with legendary jazz artists through the College’s MSU Federal Credit Union Jazz Artist in Residence program.
Four jazz nonets blend the sounds of big band with small-group performance to kick off the Jazz Spectacular series.
Three jazz orchestras perform swing and classics from jazz masters, inviting the audience to dance in this energetic concert.
High school jazz bands compete performing Duke Ellington and other big band classics for Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians and professionals. Winners perform in the finale concert and advance to the competition’s next phase in New York.
This spectacular finale features the MSU’s Professors of Jazz, Jazz Orchestra I, the Outstanding High School Band of the Day, and special guest, award-winning baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian.
