A wide variety of performance opportunities await our students each year, with orchestras, bands, choirs and opera, jazz nonets and combos, small ensembles, and more.
A variety of programs and initiatives operate continuously or annually to enhance learning experiences and help students prepare for their future in music.
The MSU College of Music supports and challenges students, values innovation and creativity, and helps every community member achieve professional excellence.
When the National Association of Schools of Music reviewed the MM in Music Education program, they stated that it is “enhanced by its strong faculty, excellent curricular design involving other disciplines within the College of Music, and a well-recognized reputation for graduate education programs at the institution overall.”
The MM in Music Education program is designed for practicing teachers and is offered in summers only. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree and certification to teach can complete a Master of Music degree in Music Education in three summers. Courses are offered during the College’s summer session, mid June through early August. Tight-knit cohorts of music educators from around the country work with our nationally-recognized full-time faculty on intensive courses focused on challenging their thinking, expanding and improving their teaching practice, and even preparing to apply for a doctoral program. We also offer hands-on, practical workshops throughout the summer. Fellowship support is available to students on a competitive basis.
Students have the choice of whether to write a master’s thesis as a part of their degree programs. Two plans are available. Plan A requires completion of a thesis. Under Plan B, students take four additional credits in graduate music education courses and complete a written and oral comprehensive exam. Students determine, with the help of faculty advisors, which plan best suits their needs.
There are multiple financial support options for graduate students in Music Education, including scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships. These opportunities provide financial assistance designed to help students focus on their studies and research while reducing the financial burden of graduate education. The MSU College of Music offers the New Directions Fellowship Fund, which includes a digital application for review and consideration. Additionally, the University’s Graduate School outlines various funding opportunities to support applicants in their decision process.
